Overview

Thank you for your interest in an internship at Massachusetts Citizens for Children! MCC recognizes that student interns contribute unique talents, skills, and knowledge to the organization and can help further the agency’s mission in a myriad of ways. In return, MCC believes that our internships provide students the opportunity to strengthen their community and explore non-profit work as a potential career. Please note that all internships are unpaid, but you can contact your university's career office to see if your school has stipends for non-profit work.

Interning at MCC offers you:

  • The chance to gain valuable work experience at a respected and unique nonprofit organization
  • Training that allows you to gain technical skills
  • The opportunity to interact with state leaders in the field of child advocacy
  • Insight into your own abilities and interests

Details of the 2004 Summer Internship Program

MCC is a small, no-frills organization that has a big impact on improving the lives of vulnerable children in Massachusetts. We can accomplish so much because of the dedication of the staff and the willingness of everyone to be involved in all facets of the organization. You will be assigned to a specific project, but at times we will ask you to assist in other ways. This flexibility will not only help us attend to the most pressing matters, but will give you an overview of all aspects of running a non-profit organization. Our summer internships are unpaid, however we ask that volunteers be able to commit to at least 10 hours or more a week.

The ideal MCC student intern will have the following skills and qualities:

  • Strong commitment to a regular volunteer schedule
  • Ability to work independently
  • Excellent writings skills and an eye for detail
  • Experience using Word, Outlook, Excel, Power Point and the Internet
  • A genuine desire to learn more about the field of child advocacy and non-profit management
  • Prior work or volunteer experience
  • Experience with Macromedia’s Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash and Freehand highly desirable, but not required

Examples of tasks you will be asked to complete:

1) Research Statistics and Update Campaign for Children website.

2 ) Monitor the State News: To provide citizens with timely information on news and events statewide, MCC must constantly monitor the political happenings in the Commonwealth. An intern will assist us by doing weekly searches in the news and helping to draft any action alerts that need to be sent to our constituents.

3) Organize Kid-Pins Sales: MCC needs help marketing our adorable KidPins to take advantage of the peaks in the sales season. Interns will contact local retailers and arrange for the pins to be sold on consignment.

4) Recruit Organizations to Host Fundraising Events: MCC has partnered with Krispy Kreme Donuts in Revere Massachusetts to host a “Raise the Dough” event. Interns will contact local sororities and fraternities to see if they are interested in putting on the event on behalf of MCC. Intern will manage all contacts and logistics of the project. These fundraising events will also serve as an opportunity for the organization to disseminate important information on child abuse prevention.

5) Follow-Up Research on Grants: We need an intern to do follow-up research on foundations we have identified as potential supporters for the organization and enter the findings into our office-wide groupware database, Commence. Once an intern is familiar with the organization, he or she will have an opportunity to draft a grant application on behalf of the organization.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:

Interested in applying? Please submit cover letter and resume to Sarah Spurgeon at volunteer@masskids.org. Make sure to specify the number of hours a week you are willing to commit.
